I was first diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was 7 years old. I was on holiday with my family, and just couldn't stop throwing up. This lead to my mum taking me to a hospital, who then moved me into Lancaster hospital.

was then diagnosed with diabetes, after having a week of tests in hospital. My parents had no clue on how to look after me, as neither had ever met anyone with diabetes before, but luckily my mum took to learning how to look after me fairly quickly.

Unlike Heidi, my school helped me from a young age, resulting in a very different situation, and therefore better blood levels. This was made even better when I was moved onto a sensor and pod system.

Heidi

I was 6 years old when I was diagnosed with diabetes. The symptoms I had were: I was going to the toilet a lot through the night, I was drinking a lot of water, and I was just becoming really unwell.

I was taken to the doctor, and they said I had a urine infection. I didn't get any better, so I was taken back to the doctor, and they said I had to go to the hospital. I was in hospital for a week. During that time, I was put on a sliding scale to get my blood sugar down, and my parents both got trained on how to give me injections.

My primary school helped me throughout the rest of my time there. However, when I moved to secondary school, my life changed completely. I went from having a lot of help and support to having none. This left me feeling embarrassed to have diabetes, and I tried to hide it.

Because I hid it, my blood sugar was constantly high and wouldn't go down. This led to my HbA1c being in the red zone for the whole of my time there. Now, however, I am on the track to having a healthier life living with diabetes, and I am not ashamed to let people know that I have it.
